Recreational Gymnastics Class
Recreational Gymnastics Class
We are immensely proud of the recreational programme we have developed at Sherwood Oaks Gymnastics Academy. A great deal of time, care, and expertise has gone into making it the best it can possibly be.
Our Recreational Programme
We are immensely proud of the recreational programme we have developed at Sherwood Oaks Gymnastics Academy. A great deal of time, care, and expertise has gone into making it the best it can possibly be. We also take safety extremely seriously, following all relevant British Gymnastics policies and guidelines. Our coaching team ensures that each child is working on skills appropriate to their age and ability level across all apparatus.
Programme Structure
Our recreational classes operate on a 5-week cycle, with a different focus each week:
- 4 weeks: Dedicated to specific apparatus
- 1 week: Focused on our Acorn Award Scheme
This structure allows children to develop in a balanced and progressive way, building both confidence and technical skill over time.
Our Primary School aged recreational programme is divided into four progressive ability levels:
- Acorn Group
- Sapling Group
- Oak Group
- Mighty Oak Group
Each level is designed to support your child’s development — whether they’re just starting out or ready to refine more advanced skills. Movement through these groups is based on individual progress, assessed by our coaching team.
Secondary School Recreational Programme
Our secondary school recreational classes place a strong emphasis on social interaction and peer connection. We recognise that this can be a challenging stage of development, and we aim to provide a welcoming, open, and accepting environment for all participants.
Classes are run by two members of staff and are fully inclusive, catering for all abilities. We refer to these sessions as Forest Recreational classes, as they support gymnasts across all ability levels — Acorn, Sapling, Oak, and Mighty Oak.
While gymnastics skills and our award scheme remain an important part of the programme, equal importance is given to the social interaction and sense of belonging that children in this age group need. Participants also have greater ownership over their sessions, with opportunities to make choices, set personal goals, and have input into activities. This approach helps build confidence, independence, and motivation, while ensuring sessions remain fun, supportive, and engaging.
